Some developments and activities in Victoria may be required to undergo an environmental impact assessment. The Victorian Minister for Planning and Community Development decides which projects are required to undergo this approvals process.
This process is governed by the The Environmental Effects Act 1978 (Vic) which is administered by the Department of Planning and Community Development under the direction of the Minister for Planning and Community Development ('the Minister').
There is also an environmental assessment and approvals process at the Commonwealth level. This is governed by the Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth). This process is administered by the Commonwealth Government Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.
These processes can be valuable in identifying and avoiding potential threats to biodiversity.
