This Act controls the welfare and responsible ownership of domestic animals, and;
- provides a regime for the protection of the environment from feral or nuisance animals;
- requires registration of cats and dogs, and permanent identification of domestic cats and dogs, horses and other animals;
- establishes procedures for identifying and controlling dangerous dogs;
- sets out powers and duties of Councils – each Council must prepare a domestic animal management plan;
- Council officer can seize feral and nuisance animals on private premises;
- imposes registration and conduct requirements on domestic animal businesses;
- regulates the boarding of cats and dogs;
In September 2009 the name of the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 was changed to the Domestic Animals Act.
