The Energy Industry Act was put in place to regulate the energy industry in Victoria.
The Act established a State Electricity Commission (SEC). The SEC's aim was to promote a consistent regulatory approach between the electricity and the gas industry in Victoria. The Essential Services Commission Act 2001 (Vic) now applies to the Energy Industry Act 200 (Vic).
The Energy Industry Act gives the commission powers with respect to price regulation, production of energy by through wind generators, and a system called bill benchmarking, which allows residential customers to monitor and compare the amount of their energy use.
